“Have I mentioned today how lucky I am to be in love with you?”

— Jamie, The Last Five Years

The Last Five Years

The Last Five Years exists as a demonstration of the right people doing the wrong things for the wrong reasons, but not knowing it at the time. It is about love and the things that we do when we think that love with fix all wounds. Jamie and Cathy show how love itself cannot be enough, no matter how much we would like it to be. They make mistakes and they get it right, and as heartbreaking as their story ends up being, it is always laced with love. I want people to watch this show and be able to substitute themselves or someone they know into the roles of Cathy and Jamie and have a better understanding of what it means to love someone for the right reasons. To learn from their mistakes, and that even though they didn’t work out, it doesn't mean that they shouldn’t have tried, or loved, at all. I want the audience to look back at the opening scene and see hope for Cathy. As we look back at the relationship with her, we see the highs and the lows and the goodness and the mistakes and how people end up being different than they originally seemed. Even if someone was once our everything, once they’ve shown who they truly are, we get the opportunity to live a new life without them. It’s a sad ending, but the beginning of something better.
